This is a nicely restored, well optioned 1966 Ford Thunderbird Convertible with a 390 V8 and automatic C6 transmission. The motor and transmission are original to the car. I am the 2nd owner of this rust free restored classic Thunderbird and have owned it for 11 years since 2010. I purchased the car from the original owner who had bought it for her father to drive. The car was her dad's pride and joy and he and his beautiful Thunderbird were well known in their small town in New Jersey. The car had been sitting in their garage for a number of years after his passing when his daughter finally contacted me and said that she was ready to let it go. When my son and I arrived we found the tires flat but otherwise in great shape. We put a fresh battery in it and were surprised to find all the windows and convertible top electronics in good working order. I promptly purchased the car but due to life and family had to leave the car with her for almost a year. We then trailered the car home and began the restoration. We replaced the fuel tank, changed the oil, installed all new tune up parts and rebuilt the carburetor and the car started and ran excellent. No smoke or noise. The car was disassembled and the body stripped, prepped, and repainted in 2012. The car was repainted in Silver Mink which is a rare original Ford Thunderbird color for 1966 and is just stunning. The paint and body are straight, smooth and shiny. The car was then reassembled with many new parts, restored original parts, and some original parts that were good enough to reuse. The engine compartment and trunk received the same level of detail as the rest of the car. The original 390 V8 runs excellent and does not smoke or have any issues. The original C6 3 speed transmission runs and shifts excellent. You will find all new hoses, belts, water pump, fuel pump, master cylinder, alternator and other "maintenance items" replaced and in new condition as the car was restored to be driven and enjoyed. I have documented the restoration with notes, pictures, and a full receipt history. The car was in great shape before the repaint as there was no rust or body damage and the body gaps were and are excellent. The original bumpers were stripped and rechromed and are beautiful. I installed brand new Kelsey Hayes type spoke wheels wrapped in brand new Coker wide white wall tires for the classic look. The original Uniroyal spare tire, jack and lug wrench are stowed in the trunk. The interior sports the original dark blue leather seats, original door panels and new carpet with all of the trim work in great shape and shining like new. The dark blue convertible top is brand new and was put down for the first time for these pictures. All of the gauges and warning lights work inside except the fuel gauge and the clock is only right twice a day. I did replace the fuel tank and sending unit before the car was painted. All of the power windows, power top, power radio antenna, reclining seat, original AM radio, turn signals, horn, interior and exterior lights, sequential turn signals and wipers work as designed. I do have an original 8 track stereo that will come with the car if you would like to upgrade. This car runs and drives great and is nothing short of fun. It drives straight and the front disk brakes stop on a dime. This is a well sorted car and has been enjoyed by my family for years. As you can see from the pictures, this car is a show stopper for the casual observer up to and including seasoned collector. This car has been part of my small collection and stored inside under a cover and driven a few special times per summer. Life has a funny way of changing ones priorities and I have moved away from collecting cars. Ebay only allows 24 pictures but I have about 100 hi-resolution pictures and a few quick video's available by email showing every area of the car. I also have plenty of paperwork including the original title, build sheet, owners manual along with other great info. Please request a link for the pictures if you have even a passing interest in this car as it is truly beautiful and detailed from top to bottom and front to back. I welcome your questions, inspections and appraisers. Serious buyers may contact me at 810.252.7308 anytime, my name is Jon. VIN 6Y85Z[hidden information] (6=1966, Y=Built in Wixom, Mi, 85=Convertible, Z=309 V8 4 bbl carb, [hidden information]=sequential build number).
Door tag info. Body 76 A=Convertible, Color N=#921 Diamond Blue, Trim 62=Dark Blue Leather, Date 11M=Built December 11th 1965, DSO 15=Ordered by Newark, NJ dealer, Axle A=3.00:1 Equa Lock, Trans 4=3 speed, C6 Dual Range Automatic.
There were only 5,049 convertibles built in 1966 and they weigh 4,692 lbs. They came standard with front disk brakes, dual exhaust, front and rear seat belts, sequential turn signals (I have a video of them working), swing away steering wheel, power steering and brakes, dash mounted clock, remote control drivers door mirror, and 315 hp (up from 300 hp in 1965). 1966 Thunderbird production started the 1st week of August 1965 and ran thru June of 1966.
This is a well optioned car and features the following options - power radio antenna, power windows, fender skirts, reclining passenger seat w/ headrest, leather seating, cruise control (new for 1966) and air conditioning. I do not believe the cruise control or air conditioning work.
While this car was painstakingly restored by very detailed craftsman and it is very beautiful, it is not brand new. There are some pieces that are not perfect and show some minor wear or evidence of use. The drivers floor pan was replaces with a correct replacement stamping and was welded in correctly. Please study all the pictures, description and paperwork and ask any questions you may have before the auction ends.
